First chapter
“I need to tell you so many things! Let’s go sit down!”
Lessons are over for today and Lilla is walking next to Mag in the small park in front of the school. The bench of mysteries is waiting for them. Every day this place gets to hear a lot of secrets, nobody knows how many love stories it saw emerging and dying…
Mag is very excited; her story with John seems to make good progress, at least in her imagination - Lilla thinks, since Mag still hasn’t told him anything! John is a nice guy… but a little clumsy. (he doesn’t seem to be used to these kind of things!)
Suddenly Mag stops talking for a moment, blushes and gives Lilla a nudge with her elbow: “Hey, look, look who is arriving! I mean, no, don’t move your head! Wow, what a dude! He is looking at you! Pretend that you didn’t notice him, pretend to be busy!”
Roger passes the bench where the two girls are sitting, gives Lilla a brief smile and disappears. Suddenly Mag whispers out: “Did you see that! He is making a pass at you! It was so obvious! Oh wow, it’s a safe bet!” But Lilla doesn’t listen to her. Suddenly something obscures the sun and a fresh breeze springs up and makes Lilla shudder. It’s very quiet, or, more precisely, there is a strange noise, an unknown rustle. Frightened, she looks at Mag, who is still sitting next to her, but who seems to be very far away at the same time. Mag is staring with unseeing eyes at the small display of the device in her hands; the colour of her hair seems to have changed. “Mag! Mag!” Lilla shouts out. “What’s the matter?” Mag wonders. “Don’t scream like that, everybody is watching us!”
Lilla looks around and recognises that the sun is shining again and that her friend is still sitting alongside her while she is squeezing her hand. Confused and out of breath, Lilla exclaims: “Mag, what happened?” Mag smiles at her friend: “What happened to you? Wow, all this just because of one smile from Roger?! I told you, this guy…” and Mag explains what she thinks about Roger, but Lilla’s thoughts are drifting away again. She is sure it wasn’t a daydream, and there was this strange smell, somehow familiar. Her heart is beating fast, as if she had a crush on somebody – but it’s not Roger! She is absorbed by her thoughts: “What’s happening to me?”
